Huang Jin Gui is a lightly fermented oolong tea. It is made from the leaves of the Huang Dan variant of the tea plant. It is an excellent example of a ‘green’ oolong due to the large amount of flavour and aromatic elements found in both the dry leaves and steeped tea. It is named Golden Osmanthus because of its golden-yellowish colour and its distinctive osmanthus fragrance.
This Huang Jin Gui is produced from the Huang Dan cultivar tea plant, an early sprouting variant which is used to make various lightly fermented oolongs such as Tie Guan Yin. The picking pattern is 1 bud and 2-3 leaves in each picking. The plants are only picked once the top leaves are partially unfurled. The harvesting of these leaves occurs in mid-April each year (this batch is from April 2020, but an exact picking date can not be given). The pickings occur in mid afternoon.
The most distinctive element of Huang Jin Gui is its smell. It produces a noticeable amount of osmanthus fragrance. The mouthfeel is silky and coats the mouth when drinking. The flavour is mellow and sweet, with very little tannin or astringency.
