***FIRST RUN SOLD OUT***
OUR FIRST RUN OF 25 TINS IS NOW SOLD OUT. WE WILL BE RELEASING 25 MORE TINS IN MID AUGUST 2020.
We are excited to share with you our strictly limited-edition tea to mark this year’s blossom of The Alnwick Garden's world-famous Taihaku cherry orchard. This is a strictly limited run. We have 25 tins available now on our online store, with another 25 available in early August.
The Garden’s temporary closure during the COVID-19 pandemic meant that visitors weren’t able to witness this year’s blossom firsthand; an event that only lasts for two weeks every year. To commemorate the event, we were granted permission to pick the blossom; something which is usually forbidden, so that we could create a tea that would let people experience a small part of this year’s blossom.
The result is a balanced blend of hand picked blossoms, sencha tea and sour cherry pieces. The resulting flavour is sweet, floral and with hints of vanilla. Light and refreshing in flavour. It is reminiscent of the flavours found in traditional preserved sweet Japanese sakura blossoms. The tea base is a blend of Japanese and China sencha's.
We visited The Alnwick Garden in mid April while the blossom trees were in full bloom. It took us two full days to hand pick 24 baskets full of blossoms. We were fortunate to be working on warm, sunny days, which made it perfect conditions for picking the blossoms.
Once picked we had to quickly wash the blossoms to remove any impurities, before sorting through and removing any broken pieces of blossom. We then dehydrating them to preserve the petals. When processing was completed, our 24 baskets had shrunk down to a mere 1/2 basket (roughly 100g) of dehydrated blossom petals. We spent a number of months experimenting with flavours before finally settling on a finished blend.
